McKenzie: “We’re not looking for stop-gaps”  (by Vic Tafur, SF Gate)…[NOTE: This is the second part of Tafur’s talk with Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie on the phone Tuesday.]  McKenzie is at the NFL owners meetings in Orlando.

  • The plan for returning starter Mike Brisiel is to get bigger in offseason and compete with recent addition Kevin Boothe and Khalif Barnes at left guard. McKenzie on the offensive line: “We’ve got some guys now, some serious guys. Let’s complete, the best man wins the job and we hit the ground running when the season starts.”
  • The Raiders’ traveling trio of Dennis Allen, Greg Olson and John DeFilippo is hitting Johnny Manziel’s pro day on Thursday …And don’t take pro days so seriously. “Pro days can only help you, they can’t hurt you,” McKenzie said. “College game tape is where the answers are.”

New defensive end Tuck helps lure more talent to Raiders  (by Vic Tarfur, San Francisco Chronicle)…soon after he signed a two-year deal with the Raiders on March 13, Tuck grabbed a list of other free agents Oakland had a potential to sign and started developing a recruiting strategy.  “I want to help build a winner,” Tuck said, over the phone. “I am pretty good at recruiting – you have to know which different buttons to push with different people. I do my homework … At Notre Dame, I only lost one of 18 players who spent time on their recruitment visits with me.”  …Offensive lineman Kevin Boothe, who was with Tuck for seven years in New York, signed with the Raiders four days after Tuck. Boothe  said Oakland is getting a winner as well as a leader in Tuck.  “He is a savvy, tenacious player,” Boothe said in a phone interview. “And he always comes up big in the big minutes. He loves the bright lights.” (read more)

Coughlin: Tuck ‘has plenty of football left’  (by Scott Bair, CSN Bay Area)…Giants head coach Tom Coughlin saluted Tuck during a Wednesday media session at the NFL owner’s meetings. “The Raiders are getting an outstanding football player and a leader,” Coughlin said. “Justin knows how to deal with young players. He can offer a different perspective on how to be a professional and how to be a quality lineman.” (read more)

Raiders liked James Jones for more than just his receiving ability   (by Tom Silverstein, Journal Sentinel)…The Packers are pretty confident they can replace the production WR James Jones gave them on the field, but a bigger question might be whether they can replace the leadership he provided in practice and the locker room. Raiders bring back one of their own free agents  (by Steve Corkran, Bay Area News Group)…Fullback Jamize Olawale on Tuesday signed the one-year contract tendered him by the Raiders in advance of free agency. Olawale is the second of Oakland’s six exclusive-rights free agents to sign the one-year tender offered them earlier this month. (read more)

Buccaneers sign free agent receiver Louis Murphy  (Associated Press)…The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed free agent receiver Louis Murphy.  Murphy spent for the first three years of his career with the Oakland Raiders after being selected in the fourth round of the 2009 draft. He was traded to Carolina in 2012 and played for the New York Giants last season. (read more)

Timetable exists for Pryor’s departure  (by Scott Bair, CSN Bay Area)…According to Alex Marvez of Fox Sports, teams have put “feelers” out regarding Pryor to gauge the trade market value for an athletic, albeit inconsistent quarterback who wants out of Oakland.  The Raiders would obviously prefer to trade Pryor but, if a market doesn’t emerge, they are prepared to release him. Marvez reports that the Raiders would cut Pryor in April. It’s expected before April 21, when Raiders offseason workouts are allowed to begin.  (read more)
